About the TDS Calculator

Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) is income tax collected upfront — the payer withholds a percentage of certain payments (salary, interest, rent, professional fees and more) and deposits it with the government on your behalf. This calculator computes the TDS for a payment at a given section rate.

Enter the payment amount and the applicable TDS rate, and it returns the tax to be deducted and the net amount payable.

Frequently asked questions

How is TDS calculated?

TDS = payment amount × rate ÷ 100, where the rate depends on the type of payment and the relevant TDS section. The payer deducts this and pays you the balance, depositing the TDS against your PAN.

What are common TDS rates?

They vary by section — for example, around 10% on professional fees (194J) and on interest above thresholds (194A), and slab-based on salary (192). The right rate depends on the payment type; this calculator applies the rate you enter.

What happens if I do not have a PAN?

TDS is deducted at a higher rate — generally 20% — if you do not provide a valid PAN. Giving your PAN ensures the correct, usually lower, rate applies and that the credit reflects in your account.

Can I get TDS back?

Yes. TDS is only an advance collection. If your total tax due is less than the TDS deducted, you claim the difference as a refund when you file your return. The deducted TDS shows in your Form 26AS / AIS.

Is TDS the same as my final tax?

No. TDS is a part-payment of your tax collected through the year. Your actual liability is computed on your total income at filing; TDS is adjusted against it, leaving either a balance to pay or a refund.
