Stamp duty on trades is a state-level charge on the transfer of securities, collected at the time of purchase (buy side only) on equity delivery, intraday, and F&O trades. Following the Stamp Duty Amendment Act 2019, collection was centralised and standardised — the exchange collects it on behalf of the state where the buyer is registered. Rates differ for delivery trades, intraday equity, and derivatives but are generally a small fraction of trade value. The charge appears on your contract note and is non-negotiable regardless of your broker.
