The simple moving average (SMA) smooths price data into a single flowing line, making trends easier to see: SMA = Sum of closing prices ÷ Number of periods. A 50-day SMA on a Nifty 50 constituent, for example, adds the last 50 daily closes and divides by 50, updating each day. Traders use the 20, 50, and 200-day SMAs as dynamic support/resistance and directional filters. Price consistently above the 200-day SMA is often read as a long-term uptrend.
