Securities Transaction Tax Securities Transaction Tax (STT)

A government tax levied on every buy or sell of listed securities on Indian exchanges.

Securities Transaction Tax is a direct tax collected at source on trades executed on recognised Indian stock exchanges (NSE, BSE). Rates (as of 2026): equity delivery 0.1% on both buy and sell; intraday equity 0.025% on the sell side; futures 0.05% on sell; options 0.15% on the premium (sell) and 0.15% on exercise. STT is deducted automatically by your broker — you'll see it in the contract note. Paying STT is also a prerequisite for claiming concessional LTCG and STCG rates.
