A penny stock trades at a very low price — sometimes just a few rupees — and usually belongs to small companies with limited disclosures, thin volumes, and questionable financials. Low price alone does not make a stock a penny stock; the combination of low price, tiny market cap, and poor liquidity is the real marker. On Indian exchanges, penny stocks are frequent targets for pump-and-dump schemes. Low liquidity means you may struggle to exit without moving the price sharply against yourself.
