Open Interest Open Interest (OI)
The total number of outstanding F&O contracts not yet settled or closed.
Open interest (OI) is the total count of active futures or options contracts not yet closed, squared off, or delivered. Rising OI with rising prices signals fresh buying (bullish); rising OI with falling prices signals fresh short-selling (bearish). Traders watch OI build-up at specific Nifty strikes — heavy call writing often acts as a ceiling; heavy put writing acts as a floor. OI differs from volume, which counts all contracts traded in a session regardless of whether positions were opened or closed.
