Market-cap categories segment listed companies by size. SEBI defines the top 100 companies by full market cap as large-caps, the next 150 (ranks 101–250) as mid-caps, and the remaining listed companies as small-caps. Large-caps like Reliance or TCS tend to be more stable and liquid; mid-caps offer higher growth potential with moderate risk; small-caps carry the highest risk but can deliver outsized returns. Mutual fund mandates and index eligibility rules are built around these SEBI-defined bands.
