An initial public offering (IPO) is when a private company raises capital by offering its shares to the public for the first time, after which the stock is listed and traded on NSE or BSE. Investors apply during the subscription window at a fixed price or price band; SEBI regulates the process through detailed disclosure requirements. A successful IPO unlocks growth capital for the company and lets early investors — promoters, VCs — partially exit their holdings.
