Foreign Institutional Investor / FPI Foreign Institutional Investor / FPI
Overseas funds and institutions registered to invest in Indian securities markets.
The term FII (Foreign Institutional Investor) — now formally replaced by FPI (Foreign Portfolio Investor) under SEBI regulations — refers to overseas entities such as pension funds, hedge funds, and sovereign wealth funds that invest in Indian equities, bonds, and derivatives. FPI flows are closely tracked because large inflows tend to lift the Nifty 50 while sustained outflows often pressure the market and the rupee. SEBI classifies FPIs into three categories based on risk level and imposes investment limits in individual stocks and sectors.
