Exchange transaction charges are fees collected by NSE and BSE on every trade executed on their platforms, based on the total turnover (value of contracts traded). Brokers pay the exchange and pass the cost through to clients, typically shown as a line item on the contract note. The charges vary by segment — equity cash, futures, options — and the rates are set by the exchange and revised periodically. While each charge is a tiny fraction of trade value, it adds up for high-frequency and F&O traders where daily turnover is large.
