Dividend Payout Ratio Dividend Payout Ratio
Percentage of net profit a company distributes as dividends.
The dividend payout ratio shows how much of its earnings a company returns to shareholders versus retaining for reinvestment: Payout Ratio = (Dividends Paid ÷ Net Profit) × 100. A company earning ₹1,000 crore and paying ₹300 crore in dividends has a payout of 30%. Mature, cash-rich Indian companies — such as certain IT majors — often sustain high payout ratios, while high-growth companies prefer to retain earnings. An unsustainably high payout (above 100%) is a red flag for future dividend cuts.
