Circuit Limit Circuit Limit

SEBI-mandated price bands beyond which a stock cannot trade on a given day.

Circuit limits are exchange-imposed price bands — an upper circuit and a lower circuit — that define the maximum percentage a stock's price can rise or fall in a single trading day, measured from the previous closing price. SEBI sets bands of 2%, 5%, 10%, or 20% depending on the stock. When a stock hits its upper circuit it freezes for buying; at the lower circuit it freezes for selling, preventing panic-driven crashes or manipulation. Index-level circuit breakers also exist for Nifty/Sensex and halt all market trading if triggered at prescribed thresholds.
