Capital Gains Capital Gains (पूँजीगत लाभ)

Profit earned from selling a capital asset such as shares or mutual funds.

Capital gains is the profit you realise when you sell a capital asset — such as listed shares, equity mutual funds, or property — for more than its purchase price: Capital Gain = Sale Price − Cost of Acquisition − Transfer Expenses. In the context of Indian equity markets, gains are classified as short-term (held 12 months or less) or long-term (held more than 12 months), with different tax rates applying to each. Losses on one asset can often be set off against gains on another, so tracking your gains and losses across the financial year matters as much as the trades themselves.
