Arbitrage Arbitrage

Simultaneously buying and selling the same asset in different markets to lock in a riskless profit.

Arbitrage exploits price discrepancies for the same or equivalent asset across two markets or instruments, locking in a near-riskless profit. A classic Indian example is cash-futures arbitrage: if Nifty futures trade at a significant premium to the spot index, an arbitrageur buys the spot basket and sells the futures, earning the spread as the gap closes at expiry. Arbitrage mutual funds in India use this strategy and enjoy equity-fund taxation. True arbitrage windows are thin and close quickly as institutional desks and algorithms compete for the same edge.
